Women Leaders and Organizational Health

McKinsey’s Centered Leadership research found that many women in leadership positions are beneficial to have for the challenges that organizations face today.

  • There is a positive 26% difference in return on invested capital (ROIC) between top-quartile companies (with 19-44% women board representation) and bottom quartile companies (with zero woman directors).
  • Intellectual stimulation, inspiration, participatory decision-making and setting expectations/rewards are 4 attributes found among female leaders more than male leaders.
  • The McKinsey Organizational Health Index (OHI) measures nine factors to compare the top positions in companies by gender. The measures range from external orientation to coordination and control to determine organizational health. Companies that score highly on all nine metrics of organizational health have also shown superior financial performance.
  • Who wins? WOMEN.

WHAT HOLDS WOMEN BACK?

Women are held back by embedded mindsets institutionally and personally. Some organizations do not promote gender diversity or just do not believe that females have the skills and/or strong personality in comparison to male counterparts, especially in leadership positions.

BENEFITS OF FEMALE LEADERSHIP
  • Sustaining gender diversity and creating shifts in mindsets
  • Strong capabilities to achieve profits and better performance
  • Influence and inspiration for other females aspiring to be in higher positions
  • Potentially high economic growth
  • Higher productivity
